About the area

The Sunshine Coast, named after the many hours of sunshine it receives, allows residents to enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle year round. Boating in Prideaux Haven, hiking the Sunshine Coast Trail, snowshoeing in the Bunster Hills, sailing in Desolation Sound, diving at Dinner Rock Campground, climbing Tin Hat Mountain, bird watching at Middlenatch Island, gardening in your own backyard, canoeing the Ragged Islands, walking Hurtado Point Trail, fishing at Major Rock, Camping at Okeover Campground and exploring outdoor living are all some of the activities locals enjoy.

Our mild climate and many hours of sunshine make all of these enjoyable, and make it easy to stay active and healthy.

Location

Lund is located at the end of Highway 101 (the world's longest highway). It is easily accessible by plane, boat, car, and bus. Powell River is a half hour drive to the south, and Vancouver is a further half hour flight by plane. Evergreen Creek Estates are about 150 kilometers northwest of Vancouver and 50 kilometers northeast of Comox.

About the People

Lund’s traditional place name is Tla’amin. It was settled by the Coast Salish peoples of this region at least five thousand years before the arrival of the Thulin brother from Lund, Sweden, who built the original hotel in 1895. Due to its desirable location and much like it is today, the village of Tla’amin was home to dozens of families, a hub for trade and a social gathering place. Events which included dance, song, and recreational games were a major part of Coast Salish culture.

The Lund Hotel is now owned by the Sliammon First Nation and so it is in keeping with the original spirit of the place, that there is a thriving music and art scene. The Lund Community Society holds regular dances and community events at the Lund Gazebo, the Community Centre and at Lund Harbour.

Today Lund is a major stopover for tourists and vacationers, with approximately 800 year-round residents. This number increases substantially during the summer months when vacationers use Lund as a staging point for trips to Savary island, Desolation Sound and points further north up the rugged BC coast.

Although most homes are "on the grid", a number of Lund residents have been innovative in harnessing the energy of the sun, wind and streams to generate their own power and organic gardening is enthusiastically embraced with our Westcoast "Mediterranean" climate. The group "Kyoto Twist Solar Cooking Society" is just one of the interesting and diverse organizations that thrive in Lund.

Entrepreneurship is alive and well in Lund with such businesses as Nancy's Bakery, TerraCentric Coastal Adventures, Jack's Boat yard, Lund Historic Hotel, Boardwalk Restaurant, Laughing Oyster Restaurant, Lund Water Taxi and several art galleries just to name a few.
